Classification regulation
Finding the right classification regulation is usually the first step in a US regulatory strategy. It tells which class applies, whether a 510(k) is needed and which special controls must be met.
Classification regulation means a section under parts 862 through 892 of this chapter that contains the identification (general description and intended use) and classification (class I, II or III) of a single device type or more than one related device type(s).
21 CFR, 860.3
The classification regulations are Agency-defined categories of medical devices based on intended use and technology. Each device classification regulation defines the class (i.e., Class I, II, or III) for the device category which in turn determines the regulatory requirements. Device classification regulations are codified by rule or order in 21 CFR Parts 862-892.
