Prospective surveillance

Under 21 CFR 822, FDA can order prospective or other designs for section 522 postmarket surveillance. Prospective designs give better control over data quality but take longer than designs that use existing records.

Prospective surveillance means that the subjects are identified at the beginning of the surveillance and data or other information will be collected from that time forward (as opposed to retrospective surveillance).
